What is the difference between registration and enrolment?

“Registering” means that the Ministry considers your child a “homeschooler” and requires only that you provide him or her with an educational program. This “program” does not have to follow Provincial Learning Outcomes. The Ministry does not require any accountability for “homeschoolers” so they do not provide any funding. Schools that register homeschoolers receive a very small sum from the Ministry ($250 for a public school, $175 for an independent school like ours) for administrative costs. Some schools give a portion of this money back to the homeschoolers. At Regent Christian Online Academy we offer $150 through a Purchase Order system to support your educational plans for each “homeschooled” student we have registered with us, plus one hour of consultation with our curriculum coordinator.

“Enrolling” in a DL program means that the Ministry considers your child a full-time (or for K, a half-time) student. This means that we're accountable to the Ministry for ensuring that your child is covering the Provincial Learning Outcomes. This also means that we must keep in contact with our families, assess the progress our students are making, and even take part in “teaching” our students. It also means that the Ministry provides funding for your child's education. Public schools receive the full amount and independent schools receive half of that. We're pleased to be able to provide an enrolment option that allows parents maximum flexibility within these guidelines from the Ministry. We then set up an educational buget, which can be used through a Purchase Order system, for anything relating to the Student Learning Plan designed by you and your child's teacher.

If you don't want any accountability and you aren't interested in having the support of a teacher then registration is probably the best choice. If you don't mind regular contact with a teacher and handing in work samples three times a year or having your student work thorough our online courses then enrolment may be a good choice. If you'd like to talk further about whether enrolment or registration will fit your family's philosophy of education please contact our office and we'll be happy to talk with you.

What is different about your school from other DL and Distance Learning Schools?

We provide maximum flexibility. Our school provides you with quality educational choices through three unique options. Our options give families the broadest range of choice available, right from designing your own course of study to having an online, Christian school delivered to your child straight through your home computer - and anything in between. Our school is based upon Christian values through our dedicated, Christian teachers, staff and families. We also want to serve you personally and will be providing Learning Centres and Resource Lending Libraries for exciting hands on courses and workshops, and will be working with you to set up local work experience and apprenticeship programs for high school age students.

Do you provide courses and workshops for parents and students?
Who should enrol in RCOA?

Parents who are dedicated to home educating their child(ren) and are not philosophically opposed to the accountability required within a D.L. program. Home-educators who are interested in working together with a teacher and a curriculum consultant to create a quality, individualized program of instruction for their child. For students grades K to 4 their curriculum will not be online based. Distance Learners, particularly in Grades 5 to 12, who are seeking an entirely accredited Christian educational program through our online curriculum or with a combination of individualized courses.

Can I still homeschool and enrol my student in RCOA?

Enrolling with our school is different than registering as a homeschooler. If you enrol with us, you have to be committed to the accountability required within our program. For many homeschoolers, enrolling with our program won't change the way they've always homeschooled, except that they'll be sending in samples of their children's work for assessment and they'll be communicating regularly with one of our teachers.

Who is in charge of my child's learning program?

The Student Learning Plan is designed according to the interests and learning needs of the student. Each SLP will be unique and will reflect the family's preferred method of learning. As a parent, you are in charge of supporting your child's learning by providing a suitable environment, offering educational resources to support the SLP, and communicating with your teacher in order to provide information for assessment. Our teachers are in charge of overseeing your child's education, supporting your child as they work towards the goals in the SLP and assessing your child's progress. Thus, the teacher, student, and parent work together as a team to help each student achieve his or her goals.

What is my role as a parent?

We recognize parents as the primary educators of their children. In the individualized program your role is to collaborate with your child and teacher to design a unique Student Learning Plan, work with your teacher to assist your child in accomplishing the SLP, and assist your teacher with their assessment by submitting the student's portfolio and conversing online with your teacher. If your child is enrolled as an online learner (Grades 5 to 12) it is your role to ensure that he/she is actively pursuing his/her studies, and that he/she has access to an Internet computer, and that communication happens regularly with his/her teacher. Finally, a parent should review all communication, via email, between your child and the teacher.

What about student assessment?

Our teachers are responsible for assessing your child. In the individualized program we ask students to submit a rich portfolio of work and/or arrange an office or home visit with your online teacher three times per year (November, March, and June). We also keep in contact with our families through email or phone contact once a week. These weekly conversations are very important to our assessment process and help us to learn more about your child's ongoing progress. Through these conversations and the portfolios submitted we can track your child's progress through the B.C. Provincial Learning Outcomes (PLO's). In the online program your child will receive a course by course assessment based upon the assignments and work submitted to the online teacher. The teacher will administer tests, often with your supervision. You will receive abundant communication via email regarding your child's progress in each course.

What is the teacher's role?

In the individualized program the teacher's primary role is to support and account for learning. Our teachers work with each family to help students achieve their goals as set out in the Student Learning Plan. Our teachers provide support, advice, and encouragement as needed and work hard to establish relationships with each home learning family. Our teachers oversee the assessment process and work together with the parent to ensure the PLO's are covered. In the online courses our teachers mark most of the academic student work, communicate regularly with the student, offer synchronous instruction at scheduled times and perform the student assessment.

Can I use Christian curriculum?

Yes! If you have chosen to use some of our Online courses then your child will automatically be receiving Christian content in their curriculum. If you're using the Individualized Option then you're free to use your favourite Christian curriculum.
